For over a decade a cooperative effort between the Salem Fire and Salem Police Departments has existed which incorporates tactical emergency medical services into the Salem SWAT Team.

SWAT Medics are trained to provide care in the austere environment of special operations missions. Training is provided to bridge the gap between traditional pre-hospital emergency medicine and specialized tactical medicine.

Primary Mission:

  • Team health care and management
  • Care under fire
  • Officer rescue
  • Medical operations planning & medical intelligence
  • Responding to the active shooter
  • Medicine across the barricade and hostage survivability
  • Preventive medicine
  • Management of WMD and Toxic Hazards
  • Assisting with special needs for extended operations
SWAT Medics are chosen from among the ranks of our members who hold a paramedic certification. An extensive and competitive evaluation of each candidate (including physical agility, psychological evaluations, and marksmanship) is conducted. Of the successful candidates, the Salem FD appoints four members, who will then serve a 2-3 year term on the team.
