"Climb for the Cure"
My name is Wes Loucks and I have been a Portland firefighter for 32 years. On March 22nd of last year my grandson, Carson, was born with Cystic Fibrosis.
Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States. A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; they also obstruct the pancreas and stop natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.
Because of this my wife, Belinda, and I have become vocal advocates and fund raisers for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation/Portland chapter. Since 1955 the CFF has been the driving force behind the pursuit of a cure, and nearly 90% of all money raised goes directly to research, care and education programs.
Because of my involvement with the Portland Cystic Fibrosis Foundation I have chosen to chair an event that you as firefighters will find challenging, exciting, and fun, while supporting a worthwhile organization that is working to find a cure for this horrible disease.
On Sunday, September 27, 2009 we will be holding the first annual FF Stairclimb! This will take place in Portland, Oregon and will be open to all professional and volunteer firefighters. This will be a 40-floor climb that will be held at the U.S. Bancorp Tower, commonly known as "Big Pink" to local firefighters.
Portland Fire Fighters Association Local 43 has signed on as a sponsor and is supporting this event.
I want to send this advance e-mail invitation of this event so that you and your respective departments can begin preparing for the upcoming Challenge.... Please help us get the word out and forward this e-mail to other firefighters and fire departments in your area.
Registration will begin on-line Monday May 4th, 2009
Please be aware that we will be limited to the number of competitors we can accomodate for this first annual event but hope to grow with your help.. So sign up early.
